Your Hires Are a Reflection of Yourself

If you are dissatisfied with an employee’s performance, look inward. That’s what Liz Ryan wrote this week in a Bloomberg Businessweek article on the relationship between leadership and employee turnover. “Leadership means taking responsibility. A leader doesn’t say, ‘My employees are losers,’ because to say that is to say, ‘I hire losers. I must be King Loser myself,’ ” Ryan states.

Those words drive home the challenge of managing and leading a team. When something goes wrong, it is within the leader’s control to solve the problem or let it languish. Sometimes, the solution is easy. Other times, it takes weeks and months to bring a team member on board with the group’s collective goals. That takes skill, perseverance and energy.

Do you have any current situations in which you are facing a leadership challenge?
